Stereotypes Made Towards Women

Gender stereotypes are generalizations about a group of people based solely on gender. Women are not excluded from this, in fact it is commonly seen in our own society. Below are a few stereotypes that women face in society.

1. A Women's Body
Women are often told by society what to do with their body, hair, make up, etc, it's as if like they have created a "standard" for women. People also see this as women trying to impress their peers and other people around them when in fact most women to this for themselves.

2. Women Are Weaker and Need More Help
Women are often seen as the weaker sex by society. They are seen as incapable of doing physical tasks around the workplace or even inside their own home. This stereotype sees women as needing a man to do physical work for them.

3. Women As Caretakers
Women in today's society are sometimes seen as the main caretaker of the home and the children. This can be seen in different shows (for example, Dexter's Laboratory) and women are often never shown being the provider for the family or home.

4. The Way a Women Dresses
How a women dresses is also stereotyped by society. This stereotype implies that women must wear certain colours such as pink or purple, wear "womens" clothes such as dresses, skirts and crop tops. Some women wearing things labeled manly will be looked at differently than a women dressing "normally"

What is a Stereotype?

Stereotypes are a widely believed idea or image people have that is put onto a person or a group of people. This is most common between ethnic groups, Asians are bad at driving, Mexicans are all illegals,White people are all racist, the list goes on. All stereotypes are generalizations, but all generalizations are not stereotypes. The main difference that separates  the two is that a generalization may only be thought of by a few people but a stereotype is widely known. The truth of stereotypes is that they are virtually never true. This is due to how some people stereotype a whole race but in reality, that one race can be split down into more ethnic groups (ex. Asian's can be broken down into Japanese people) that are completely different from each other. Even when you stereotype into those smaller ethnic groups, it is still not true, this is because no two people are completely the same, connecting stereotypes to skills and traits can never be true since people learn differ...

Positive Stereotypes

Can stereotypes be positive? Yes, positive stereotypes do exist. Positive stereotypes can be defined as linking a positive trait with a group of people. This can still be harmful since stereotypes do not apply to all people. For example "All Asian people are good at math". We can see how this is a positive stereotype. The stereotype compliments Asians, saying that we are all good at a certain subject. So, how is this harmful? It forces people to believe that they have to be good at this or they may not be a "real Asian". A person may not be the best at this subject but what makes them less of their race than someone who is? This can put pressure on Asian people due to the fact that if they believe that this is true, they may think that they are underachieved because their skills are not to par with societies standards. This can apply to other stereotypes as well. "All black people are good at sports.", so what about the ones who excel at academ...
